Get Involved

We would love for you to become involved! The need is so great and you do make a difference.

The Storybook Project Volunteer

The Storybook Project began in 1999 and continues to strengthen the bond between incarcerated mothers and their children.

With this program, the children receive a book along with a treasured audio recording of their mother reading the book. Recording sessions are held monthly or bi-monthly, with books and recordings presented to approximately 60 children.

We seek volunteers willing to help our incarcerated mothers’ read and record onto a CD, package and send materials to their children.

My Caregiver & Me Program

The My Caregiver & Me Program was established in 2012. This program, supported by A Sacred Place volunteers, encompasses extended visitation time every other month for inmates and their children.

A child-friendly play area has been furnished in one corner of the visiting center, along with an assortment of toys and games purchased by A Sacred Place. Volunteers, both incarcerated women and people form the community, facilitate craft projects with the mothers and their children.

Hundreds of women and children have participated in a volunteer facilitated craft activity during extended visitation held every other month.

Sacred Sweeties

When incarcerated pregnant women give birth their babies are released to family members, designated caregivers or foster agencies. Sacred Sweeties provides a needed gift bag filled with disposable diapers, lotions, bottles and some other helpful items to accompany that little person to their new home.

Donations of any-sized baby diapers, rash cream, bibs, blankets and new-born simple clothing are all welcome including hand-made items of soft yarn.

Our incarcerated women do enjoy crocheting small toy animals out of baby yarn to include as a whimsical surprise. Donations of washable / hypoallergenic synthetic baby yarn in all pastel colors are always needed and welcomed. Whether your donation is by check or donated products we thank you very much.

Sacred Sweats

Sweat suits (sweatshirts and pants) for women being released are desperately needed, especially in larger sizes – though we welcome all. Women are often released after years of incarceration with only the clothing that was on them at arrest. Most often those clothes no longer fit or are inappropriate for the weather or other reasons. Most do not have the funds to buy the clothes needed upon release. They welcome new, clean, comfortable clothes suitable for release.

Donated sweat suits should be NEW and NOT be grey or maroon and should NOT have hoods. They may have zippers and pockets. Please contact us for instructions for drop-off or to arrange pick-up by an ASP volunteer who will deliver them to the prison. Because of vetting procedures we cannot accept, nor do we recommend personal prison drop-off donations. Thank you so much!
